Nedra Spears Black

Matthew 22:37-40

With gratitude for a life well lived, we remember

Nedra Spears Black "Ned"

9/23/19408/15/2026

Nedra ("Ned") was born in Conway, South Carolina, to Daisy Light Spears and James Monroe Spears. As an infant, she moved with her family to Akron, Ohio, where she grew up and graduated from East Akron High School. She began her career with the Federal Bankruptcy Court and married Jerry Black in 1959. Together, Ned and Jerry built a loving home and raised two daughters, Kelly and Kerry. In 1977, they returned to Conway, South Carolina, with their family. Ned worked as a legal secretary for several years before becoming Executive Assistant to the Director of the Waccamaw Center for Mental Health in Conway. After retiring, Ned found great joy in tending her beautiful yard, spending time with family and friends, and serving her church. A devoted member of First Baptist Church of Conway, she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir for many years. She will be remembered for her kindness, faith, and the love she shared with everyone around her.

Nedra was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Jerry Black; her parents, James M. Spears and Daisy Spears Irle; her stepfather, Vincent Irle; and her siblings, James A. Spears and Jackie S. House.

Nedra is survived by her daughters, Dr. Kelly J. Black (Lou Kelly Durand) and Kerry Black Harrelson (Frenchie); her grandchildren, Tanner Harrelson (Lacey), Bradey Harrelson, Fallyn Harrelson Tocco (Joey), Colby Kyes (Caroline Rosa), Rachel Kyes, Emily Durand, and Sawyer Durand; and her six great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Tucker, Zoey, & Mason Harrelson, and Natalie & Bennett Elvin. She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Service details will be shared with family once arrangements have been finalized.

Nedra had a lifelong love for animals, especially cats. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Sav R Cats International (www.sav-r-cats.com).

The family extends its heartfelt thanks to Marley, Lori, and the entire staff of Your Health Hospice for the compassionate care and support they provided. We are also deeply grateful to Sara Lynn Edge for her years of dedicated in-home care; Annie Register for her weekly support, kindness, and companionship to Nedra; and Henrietta Greene and Cindy Jackson for their invaluable backup support whenever it was needed.

Kindness, faith, and love will never be forgotten.
