Why create an online obituary at obituary.design?
obituary.design helps you create a tasteful online obituary without writing or design experience. With our Obituary Maker, you can add their photo and a gallery of favorite photos, the life story, family details, service information, memorial donations, and a condolence book. The finished obituary is ready to share publicly or privately, and is often far less expensive than newspaper or Legacy.com listings.
Where will the obituary be published?
If you choose the public option, the obituary will be published in our obituary directory and can be found by search engines. If you choose the private option, it will not be listed publicly. You can also download the obituary as a print-ready PDF and image.
What does the “Private” option mean?
The “Private” option means the obituary will not appear in our public directory. Instead, you receive a private link that you can share with family and friends. Anyone with this link can view the obituary.
Can the obituary be found with Google?
If the obituary is not published with the “Private” option, it can usually be found through Google and other search engines after a short time. Sometimes this takes a little longer, often 24–48 hours.
How much does an online obituary cost?
An online obituary costs a one-time fee of $29. There is no subscription.
How much does an anniversary memorial cost?
An online anniversary memorial also costs a one-time fee of $29, with no subscription.
How can I pay?
You can pay securely by credit or debit card, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or another available digital wallet. The available payment methods are shown at checkout.
Why is the online obituary not free of charge?
The one-time fee helps us operate, maintain, and improve obituary.design. We also do not place advertisements on obituary pages, so the setting remains dignified and respectful.
Prefer to create it yourself at no cost? Our free obituary templates for Word include fill-in-the-blank wording you can personalize and print.
How do relatives and friends find out about the death?
Most families share the obituary link by text message, email, Facebook, or other social media. You can also download the obituary as an image or PDF for funeral programs, keepsakes, home printing, or forwarding. Our guide on how to share an obituary has messages you can copy for texts, email, and social media.
How does the online condolence book / guest book work?
If you activate the condolence book, it will appear directly below the obituary. Relatives and friends can leave memories, condolences, and messages of support. Condolence book entries are public on the obituary page. You will receive an email notification when someone writes an entry, with the option to remove it directly.
Can I add more than one photo?
Yes. Next to the main photo, you can add a gallery of up to 8 more photos, each with an optional caption. It appears below the obituary, and visitors can tap a photo to see it full screen. The gallery is included at no extra cost. It is shown on the online obituary only, not in the PDF or image.
Can I include service details, memorial donations, and family acknowledgments?
Yes. The obituary maker includes dedicated sections for service details, memorial donations, acknowledgments, arrangements, and online condolences. You can leave any section blank if it is not needed.
