Elba Luther Cook, Jr. Also known by many as Sonny
April 3, 1937 – September 21, 2026
Elba Luther Cook (Sonny), 89, of Athens, Texas, died of systolic congestive heart failure at Hospice Home Place in Tyler, Texas on September 21, 2026. He was born in Las Angeles in 1937 to Margaret Marie and Elba Luther, Sr. and had nickname Sonny. He joined the Airforce when he was seventeen and served from 1955-1963 and spent most of his adult life in Texas with his family members.
He was preceded in death by his mother Margaret Marie Cook, father Elba Luther Cook, Sr., brother Lonnie Ray Cook, wife Ruby G. Wilson Daniels Cook, Sons Donny Ray Cook, Paul Daniel Cook, and his beloved dog Roscoe.
He is survived by his three sisters Jessie Progen, Jeannie Kimble, Jeanette Loper and her husband Joe, four children, Stephen Cook, Cynthia Reeves, Ginger St. Francis, Melissa Mellin and her husband David, ten grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Athens, Texas at 2:00 PM on October 17, 2026 at Autry’s Carroll-Lehr funeral home located at 1910 E. Tyler Street, Athens, Texas.
In Elba Luther's honor, the family encourages friends to spend time with loved ones, share a meal, or help someone in need.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Hospice Home Place in Tyler, Texas for their compassionate care. Arrangements entrusted to Autry's Carroll-Lehr in Athens, Texas.
